Postiz vs Buffer: which scheduler should you choose in 2026?

Compare Postiz and Buffer on pricing, self-hosting, channels, AI and team workflows, with clear tradeoffs and when Postbase is worth considering.

29 October 2026 · 7 min read

Our pick is Buffer for a solo creator who wants a free hosted scheduler for a few accounts, and Postiz for a technical team that wants the option to self-host. Postiz also offers paid cloud plans, so you don't have to run a server to use it. With monthly billing in USD, Buffer Essentials starts at $6 per channel per month, while Postiz Cloud Standard costs $29 per month for up to five channels. Choose by your actual accounts, team workflow and willingness to maintain software, rather than a blanket claim that one is better.

We're Postbase, another scheduler, so weigh our perspective accordingly. This comparison uses the vendors' published pricing and documentation, checked on October 29, 2026. It isn't a hands-on speed or reliability test. We'll explain where Postbase fits after comparing the two tools you came here for.

What are the main differences?

Decision Buffer Postiz Cloud Self-hosted Postiz
Who runs it? Buffer Postiz Your team or hosting provider
Cost model Free plan, then paid plans per connected channel Subscription tiers with account allowances Infrastructure, services and maintenance
Best reason to shortlist A small hosted publishing setup Bundled pricing as the account count grows Control over your deployment
AI integrations API and MCP MCP, CLI, API and webhooks Check configuration and dependencies for your deployment
Main decision to resolve Which plan covers your collaboration needs? Which tier fits your accounts and team? Who owns updates, credentials, backups and recovery?

The deployment distinction matters: choosing Postiz does not automatically mean choosing self-hosting. Compare hosted services with each other first, then evaluate running your own installation separately. Sources: Buffer API, Postiz plans, Postiz installation guide.

Which costs less for your account count?

For a light solo workload, Buffer Free covers three channels with ten queued posts per channel. Those slots refill after publication; it isn't a ten-post monthly allowance. Buffer plan details.

For paid use, compare the same billing period. These are USD monthly-billing subscription costs, before any applicable taxes, for the stated number of connected accounts:

Connected accounts Buffer Essentials Buffer Team Postiz Cloud tier with enough channels
3 $18/month $36/month Standard: $29/month, up to 5
10 $60/month $120/month Team: $39/month, up to 10
30 $135/month $195/month Pro: $49/month, up to 30

The Buffer totals use its published volume bands: the first ten channels cost $6 each on Essentials or $12 on Team; channels 11–25 cost $4 each and 26–50 cost $3 each. The 30-account figures are calculated from those bands. Postiz prices are whole-plan amounts. Sources: Buffer's published rates, Postiz pricing.

These are capacity comparisons, not equivalent-feature bundles. Buffer Essentials is for one user; Team includes unlimited members and approval workflows. Postiz lists unlimited team members on Team and Pro, but a team seat alone doesn't establish the approval process you need. Buffer features, Postiz features.

Compare annual commitments separately. An annual price expressed per month isn't interchangeable with a subscription you can pay for one month at a time.

There is no universal break-even account count. First eliminate plans that miss your requirements; then compare their current quotes, including discounts, taxes and any extra services.

What does self-hosting Postiz involve?

Postiz publishes its source code and documents a Docker Compose installation. That makes it an option when running the scheduler on infrastructure you control is a requirement. It also puts deployment decisions in your hands. Postiz repository, installation documentation.

Connecting networks can involve registering developer apps and configuring provider credentials. Requirements differ: Postiz documents several providers that accept credentials directly in the connection dialog, without a separate developer-app setup. Check each network you intend to use before provisioning a server. Provider setup requirements.

Budget for hosting, storage, backups, monitoring, relevant third-party services and the time spent maintaining the installation. A useful comparison is:

Monthly operating cost = infrastructure + paid services + maintenance hours × your internal hourly cost.

That's a budgeting model, not a vendor quote. Assign an owner for updates and recovery before migrating a business-critical publishing calendar. If you don't want that responsibility, compare Buffer with Postiz Cloud instead.

Which supports the networks and formats you need?

Postiz's channel list includes Reddit, Discord, Telegram, WordPress and other destinations beyond the usual social networks. Buffer's list includes Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Google Business Profile and Substack. Check the live lists rather than choosing by a headline network count. Postiz channels, Buffer channels.

A network logo isn't a promise that every format works. Make a short list of the exact things you publish: account type, video length, carousel, thread, first comment, thumbnail and visibility. Then test those combinations.

That is especially important if one account needs a format the rest never use. A tool can cover nearly your entire calendar and still miss the campaign that matters most.

Is Postiz the only option for AI and automation?

No. Buffer documents a GraphQL API and MCP connections for AI tools, with API access on current plans including Free. Its limits vary by plan and apply across time windows, so an integration needs to handle throttling. Buffer's API and MCP.

Postiz includes its hosted MCP server, CLI, public API and webhooks on every cloud plan. Its published features also include repeated posts and RSS auto-posting. These are useful reasons to evaluate it when publishing is part of a larger automated workflow. Postiz automation features.

Test the full job rather than the existence of an integration: create a draft, attach media, select the correct account, schedule it, inspect its status and recover from a failure. Keep human approval explicit wherever the workflow requires it. Access to an AI tool does not establish that a publishing approval gate exists.

Which is better for teams and reporting?

Start with the approval process you need: internal review, client sign-off or several people approving in sequence. Ask each vendor to demonstrate that process before treating collaboration features as equivalent.

Use two sample clients and invite people in the roles they will actually hold. Check whether one client can see another's assets, who can schedule, whether revisions need fresh approval and how access is removed when a contract ends.

For reporting, recreate a real deliverable in each trial. Check the networks, metrics, history window and export you need. We haven't run a comparable analytics test, so we aren't declaring a reporting winner from a feature checkbox.

When should you consider Postbase instead?

Postbase is worth a look if you want client workspaces and scheduling from your AI assistant, with a hosted plan priced by capacity. That's us, so the fit and limitations matter more than the recommendation.

Team is $39/month for 15 channels, five people and three workspaces; Pro is $59/month for 50 channels, 15 people and five workspaces. Channels and people are shared across workspaces. The plans include an MCP server and API; X posts containing links have a separate monthly allowance. Postbase pricing.

Each workspace has its own channels, calendar, media and team. Formal client approvals aren't available yet: the documented approach is to review drafts and then schedule them. If enforced sign-off is essential, that is a reason to choose another tool. Postbase for agencies.

The hosted MCP server lets assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT draft and schedule, with the posts visible on the calendar. That makes Postbase a candidate for a workflow built around an assistant, alongside the integrations already offered by Buffer and Postiz. Postbase MCP.

Check network fit before price. Postbase lists X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon, TikTok and YouTube, while Instagram, Facebook and Threads are coming soon. TikTok posts currently publish privately pending approval for public posting. Current network status and TikTok limitation.

How should you make the final decision?

  • Start with Buffer if your solo workload fits its free plan and its supported formats cover your calendar.
  • Evaluate Postiz Cloud if you want a hosted service and its bundled capacity or automation features fit your workload.
  • Evaluate self-hosted Postiz if deployment control is required and someone will own the operations work.
  • Include Postbase if its workspace and assistant workflow fits, and its network and approval limitations don't block you.

Before switching, pilot one week's content on approved test accounts. Reconcile scheduled posts by account and timestamp, export anything you need to retain, and cancel duplicates in the old scheduler before the new queue takes over. Don't assume historical analytics or approval records migrate automatically.
